In a statement posted Wednesday on a militant website, the Islamic State of Iraq said the ?blessed foray? marked the beginning of a campaign it calls ?Breaking the Walls,? announced last week by the local insurgency?s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Al-Baghdadi said that his network?s aim was to rebuild tribal alliances in order to make a comeback in Sunni areas from which it had retreated in 2007-2008.
The assaults, which mainly targeted security forces, made Monday the deadliest day in Iraq since May 10, 2010, when a string of nationwide attacks killed at least 119 people.

Thalidomide maker 'ignored birth defects for years'
The German makers of thalidomide were warned of birth defects years before it was withdrawn and Australian distributors used pregnant women as the world's first test subjects, court papers alleged Friday.
Affidavits sworn in the lawsuit of an Australian woman born without limbs after her mother took thalidomide claimed that the drug's maker Grunenthal ignored and covered up claims that it caused birth defects dating back to 1959.
Thalidomide was not withdrawn from sale until late 1961, but excerpts of internal company correspondence filed in the Supreme Court of Victoria alleged doctors first warned of serious deformities more than two years earlier.
An estimated 10,000 children worldwide were born with defects after their mothers took thalidomide, which was marketed as a morning sickness drug and sold in nearly 50 countries.
The correspondence was obtained in an Australian class action involving up to 100 thalidomide victims, sections of which were published online Friday in two lengthy affidavits sworn by counsel leading the case, Michael Magazanik.
Magazanik said the previously secret documents revealed repeated warnings to Grunenthal from doctors and distributors from as far afield as Sri Lanka and Lebanon.
He said the documents also showed thalidomide was never tested on gestating animals before it went on sale.
Instead, the first clinical trials in the world were conducted in Australia in 1960 and used "pregnant women rather than laboratory animals as experimental subjects", he alleged.
At that time doctors were already allegedly warning Grunenthal that their drug had caused birth defects, and throughout 1960-61 hospitals and pharmacists were returning their entire thalidomide stocks or refusing to buy or supply it.
Some six months before it was formally declared unsafe and removed from sale Grunenthal's own staff were already refusing to use thalidomide, fearing its side-effects, Magazanik's affidavit claimed.
As many as 10 Grunenthal staff had children with birth defects after taking thalidomide between 1959-61, it said, with a similar number of deformities among children born to employees at its British partner Distillers.
In-house lawyers warned the company repeatedly in 1961 that it had "behaved improperly in failing to provide adequate warnings to doctors and consumers", had been negligent and was at "great risk in legal proceedings", it added.
According to the documents, Grunenthal misled and failed to inform distributors in Britain and Germany about the extent of problems and deliberately withheld that information from the US Food and Drug Authority.
The Australian case, which is yet to go to trial, is being led by wheelchair-bound Lynette Rowe, 50, who was born without arms and legs after her mother took thalidomide during pregnancy.
Distillers, which is now part of Diageo, settled out of court with Rowe this month and agreed to negotiate with others in her class action, but Grunenthal has denied wrongdoing and vowed to "fully defend" any legal action.
"Grunenthal maintains that its actions were consistent with the state of scientific knowledge and the prevailing standards for pre-marketing and testing of the pharmaceutical industry in the 1950s," it said of Rowe's case.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden told a national firefighters' union Wednesday that Republicans don't understand them and that government should be helping cities and states maintain fire services ? not threatening to cut funding.
Firefighters face a "perfect storm," he told more than 3,000 firefighters at the annual meeting of the International Association of Fire Fighters. He cited the effects of the recession, budgetary policies in Congress and efforts to dismantle the collective-bargaining rights of firefighters and other public employees around the country.
"We should be cutting your taxes and helping cities and states maintain their fire service," Biden said.
He said Republicans look at firefighters and see an easy place to cut budgets.
"I don't think he understands what you're about," Biden said of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. He added: "This is not your father's Republican Party. They act like you're the community's problem."
Biden, however, avoided the contract dispute in Philadelphia between firefighters and Democratic Mayor Michael Nutter, an outspoken supporter of re-electing President Barack Obama. Firefighters plan a City Hall protest on Thursday.
After the speech, Romney's campaign issued a statement from a retired Philadelphia firefighter who said Obama is out of touch with the struggles of middle-class people.
"Joe Biden can come to Philadelphia, and he can try and tell the hard-working men and women of this city that he understands what we've been going through," said Fred Donnelly, a retired battalion chief. "But no matter what he says, he can't cover up the words of the president."
Donnelly cited Obama's recent comments about the private sector "doing fine" and the success of small-business owners, which Republicans have been using against the president.
"We know that he is simply out of touch with the struggles that middle-class Americans are going through, and that he doesn't understand what drives the American economy," Donnelly said of Obama.

The Boise City Parks and Recreation Department (cityofboise.org) organizes league games, like five-on-five basketball through Boise's NBA development league team, the Idaho Stampede. Volleyball, flag football and adult softball are also part of the lineup, and Parks and Rec recently launched adaptive sporting, with leagues for adults and children with disabilities, including wheelchair rugby and basketball.
"That's what makes it kind of cool. Everyone has their abilities and their disabilities," said Parks Coordinator Emily Kovarik. "The guys that are currently playing [wheelchair rugby] are considered quadriplegics. They're banging around inside the gymnasiums right now."
Sports leagues?whether the players are hellbent on taking home trophies or just bent on having a good time?are bringing back sports as a community builder.
"It's the strength in numbers that gets people organizing and it progresses the sport more effectively, too," said Cusick. Whether it's building together, or shaping trails, maintaining trails; it's doing things together."
Eric Leaman realized the potential to build on this theory. He return to Boise after finishing his undergrad degree at the University of Washington, where he worked for a company that made casual sports leagues into a business. Leaman said he knew he could export the model to Boise, where he could build new relationships.
"When you're cheering someone on, and you're meeting someone in a low-pressure social setting, afterward you trust that person, you know them," he said. "Then you can go to the bar."
During his Ignite Boise 8 presentation titled Bowling Alone, Leaman talked about the decline in civic engagement, something he hopes to bring back with his new business, Gameday Sports (gamedayboise.com). He organizes leagues for sports like bowling, dodgeball, softball and kickball.
"That civil, face-to-face engagement brings back trust to a community," said Leaman.
Few rec groups are as fervent as Boise's running community, with local shops like Shu's Idaho Running Company (1758 W. State St., Boise), See Jane Run (814 W. Idaho St., Boise) and Bandanna Running and Walking (504 W. Main St., Boise) serving as cultural hubs for the sneaker-clad faithful.
All three stores offer regular group runs, relays, races and marathons?basically, as long as a hurricane hasn't hit the Treasure Valley, chances are a group of runners can be found.
If you'd rather slow the pace and get off the pavement, ebullient hikers flock to the Boise Foothills in comfy boots to hit local trails. The Idaho Hiking Club (meetup.com/idahohikingclub) boasts a swelling membership of explorers, offering up all manner of local excursions.

LOS ANGELES ? Whether it?s tiny Union Jacks, tuxedos, stripes, crystal flowers or caviar pearls, nail art has gone mainstream.
No longer relegated to the subculture sidelines or the subject of mockery, nail art has become an everyday indulgence, and not just for flamboyant pop stars like Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga. It?s been sported by Britain?s Princess Eugenie, worn to the White House Correspondents? Association Dinner and shown up at the Golden Globe Awards.
?Nail art has been around for years, but in kitschy ways, like a Santa Claus or a Christmas tree on your pinky nail,? says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, creative director of OPI. ?But in the last five years, the emphasis on nail design has been huge. ? Nails are an accessory.?
Nail art is part of a larger trend of individualized self-expression that includes tattooing, body piercing and wild, temporary hair color ? all of which is being driven in no small part by our cultural compulsion to share-and-compare on YouTube, blogs and social media.
Welcome to the era of what might be called Kustom Beauty, doing for the individual what the Southern California Kustom Kulture movement did for jazzy hot rods.
?Nail art has almost crept into the mainstream a couple of times,? says Linda Wells, editor in chief of Allure magazine. ?The closest call came when hip-hop artists Mary J. Blige and Missy Elliott were doing nail art with crazy designs like dollar bills and designer logos in the late 1990s and early 2000s. But then it disappeared.?
Now it?s not only back, it?s booming. As of June 10, consumer spending on nail products and accessories at the mass-market level had increased 23 percent over the previous year to more than $1 billion, according to Symphony IRI Group, a Chicago-based market research firm. And the number of nail salons nationwide doubled between 1997 and 2007.
The boom is due in part to nail technology advances. ?People can do this at home,? Wells says. ?It doesn?t require going to the salon for four hours. Maybe you can?t do Katy Perry?s 3-D flowers at home, but you can do other things. Sally Hanson has stick-ons that look good because they are not stickers, they are made of nail lacquer, and they are flexible.?
OPI recently released its first nail decals. Called OPI Pure Lacquer Nail Apps, they come in 14 designs, including rattlesnake, lace and fishnet prints, for $11.95 per package. Each kit contains 16 pre-cut appliques, which require only trimming once they are stuck on the nails.
Gel-color manicures, which are baked on using UV light and last two to three times longer than a regular manicure, allow for long-lasting decoration, including gradated glitter and stripes, as well as crystal and charm appliques.
The fashion world has embraced ? and stoked ? the nail art trend. Polish and cosmetics brands partner with fashion designers to create new colors and patterns that are presented during the fashion labels? runway shows in global style capitals such as Milan, Italy; Paris; and New York. At New York Fashion Week in February, for instance, MAC cosmetics created custom velvet-flocked nail tips for the Ruffian presentation. For the Kate Spade show, nail pro Deborah Lippmann designed polka dot nail art. And, front-row regular, blogger and model Alexa Chung wowed the fashion crowd with the Egyptian-style hieroglyphic eyeballs painted on her nails. ?Years ago, you never used to see nail polish on the runways,? Weiss-Fischmann says. ?And now, designers like Marc Jacobs and Jason Wu want nail designs to match certain looks, like painting the nail moon a different color or stripes, two toning or gradation.?
Celebrities have also been influential in popularizing nail art. Peacockish pop singers like Minaj and Lady Gaga seem to be out to see who can sport the most outrageous manicures. For the ?Born This Way? video, Japanese-born, New York-based nail artist Aya Fukuda filed Gaga?s talons to sharp points, polished them blood red and decorated them with Gothic-looking jet black Swarovski crystals and silver hardware.
But the trend isn?t just for teen fangirls. ?I?m surprised at how women in their 30s and 40s are doing this,? Wells says. ?It?s a playful thing and the beauty of it is that it can be taken off tomorrow. It?s something you really can do for an evening.?
A lot of the recent creative inspiration has come from Japan, where there are numerous nail art magazines and competitions.
?It?s 3-D things and bar codes, gold glitter on the tips, nothing is off-limits,? says Wells, who has yet to jump on the nail art bandwagon, being a pale pink Essie Mademoiselle woman herself. ?The fascination with highly decorative things, with miniaturization of detail ? that has finally come here.?
The Tokyo-based Mars salon recently opened its first U.S. location on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood, offering high-end gel manicures starting at $80, along with custom nail art in a luxury setting. Each customer has a private room, with a television, where two technicians work at one time. It?s not uncommon for clients to come in with clothing they want their nails to match. One woman brought in a picture of a beaded Diane von Furstenberg top. The technicians were able to mimic the color and 3-D nature of the floral beading in the nail design. ?Later, Diane (von Furstenberg) tweeted about it,? says Hiroko Fujikawa, the owner of Mars.
Chicago-based artist Dzine was so inspired by the creativity that goes into nail art designs and the sense of community at salons that he wrote ?Nailed: The History of Nail Culture and DZine,? published last year by Standard Press/Damiani. The book covers the history of nail adornment all the way back to the Ming dynasty and features commissioned photography of extraordinary contemporary nail art from around the world. A selection of photographs from Dzine?s book is scheduled to be on view beginning in September at Subliminal Projects gallery in L.A.
One of the designs in the book features miniature sculpted camping paraphernalia (a tent, a bonfire) on each nail, another 3-D flowers ?growing? out of the nails like vines.
?I didn?t want to have celebs in the book, and I didn?t want it to be the ?Guinness Book of World Records? either,? he says. ?I wanted to stay true to the young nail techs and creative artists.?
One of these new creative artists is Oakland, Calif.-based Liz Baca, a freelance stylist and vintage clothing dealer who never had any professional beauty training but was inspired by her love of fashion to create custom nail art designs to match designer accessories, such as Chanel sneakers and Tiffany & Co?s blue boxes. Nails ?are like tiny canvases,? Baca says. ?And it?s really trial and error about what adhesive will work with what I?m trying to glue on my nail. I went as far as putting real food on nails for one of our shoots. One of the nails had crumbled-up potato chips with French onion dip at the tips.?
The fascination with nail decoration to this degree will probably never wane among artists and craftsy folks such as Baca. The real question is whether nail art will continue to ride the wave of mainstream popularity or fall under the changing tides of fashion.
?I don?t see it ending right away,? says Wells, likening the nail art trend to the now near-decade-long cultural obsession with decorative shoes by the likes of Christian Louboutin.
It?s true that nail art, like shoes, provides an easy way to spice up even the most basic of outfits. And, like shoes, nail decoration can fit and flatter, no matter your dress size.
?It?s on an appendage. It?s fun and experimental in a way people are not willing to do with their hair or facial makeup, which is too close to their identity,? Wells says. ?The farther you get from the face, the more experimental you are willing to be.?

North Korean TV confirms leader Kim is married
North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un is married, state media confirmed on Wednesday, ending weeks of speculation about the identity of a stylish young woman seen accompanying him at official events.
Kim, believed to be in his late 20s, took over the impoverished nuclear-armed nation when his father Kim Jong-Il died last December, but the intensely secretive state had previously given no details of his private life.
State television reported that the young Kim took part in a ceremony Wednesday with his wife to mark completion of a Pyongyang amusement park.
"Marshal Kim Jong-Un took part in the opening ceremony of Nungra People's Amusement Park with his wife, Comrade Ri Sol-Ju," it said.
The couple were given a warm welcome, the official news agency said. "All the participants enthusiastically welcomed them, loudly shouting 'Hurrah!'", it reported.
A smiling Kim and his wife toured the pleasure grounds and watched a dolphin show "to the tune of joyful music" together with senior party, state and army officials and diplomats, the agency said.
There was no information on how long they have been married.
The short-haired woman was first shown with Kim during a concert in Pyongyang on July 6. She was seen walking next to the leader on July 8 when he visited the mausoleum of his grandfather and the nation's founder Kim Il-Sung.
On July 15, photos aired by state television showed her standing close to the new leader during a visit to a kindergarten.
With other officials staying a few steps behind the pair, she was seen smiling while standing immediately behind or next to Kim as he hugged and talked to children.
In contrast to his late father, who spoke just once at a major public event during his 17 years in power, Kim has cultivated an outgoing and informal style.
He has been seen hugging soldiers, posing for photos with troops and linking arms with women.
The chubby young man physically resembles his late grandfather, who still commands respect among some North Koreans for his past as an anti-Japanese guerrilla fighter and national founder.
"It's quite unusual for North Korea to present its leader and wife together in public," said Yang Moo-Jin of Seoul's University of North Korean Studies.
"This highlights the regime's campaign to create a new image for its leader," he told AFP.
Yang said Kim is also trying to show the people that his leadership is stable.
The United States took the opportunity to reiterate its concerns about the plight of North Koreans under the Kim family dynasty.
"We would always wish any kind of newlyweds well as they embark" on married life, said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, joking that the United States had not been invited to the wedding.
"But obviously our concerns first and foremost are for the North Korean people, and our hope that conditions for them will improve."
Analysts say the new leader appears fully in charge of the nation, despite having had relatively little time to prepare for the succession.
Last week the regime sacked powerful military chief Ri Yong-Ho on the grounds of ill health, in what was seen as a move by the new leader to strengthen his grip on the 1.2 million-strong armed forces.
Kim was later appointed "Marshal" of North Korea, a title previously held by his late father.
The International Crisis Group think-tank, in a report released Wednesday, said he appears to be in charge in his own right despite speculation he would have to rely on close advisers.
But it said there was nothing to suggest he would take measures to improve the lot of his people or reduce regional frictions.
Regional tensions have been high since the North launched a long-range rocket on April 13. It said the aim was to launch a peaceful satellite, while the United States and its allies saw a disguised ballistic missile test.

Former judge Steven Tyler, who joined the show in 2010, announced just on July 12 that he was leaving the program after two seasons. The next day, Jennifer Lopez, who also joined the show in 2010, told host Ryan Seacrest on his radio show that she likely would not be back. Fox exec Kevin Reilly told reporters Monday that he is "100 percent" sure J.Lo would not return.
Original judge Randy Jackson has not yet announced if he will be back for another season, and there were rumors this month that he, too, would be leaving. But if he's also headed for the door, it sounds like executive producer Nigel Lythgoe would be OK with the exit. "I'd like to see ('Idol') change judges every year," he told reporters at TCA. "I think they need that."
Though there is still at least one seat open at "Idol's" table, Reilly wouldn't say who else might be in the running. "I can't talk about other negotiations," he said. "We literally just closed Mariah, but I like the way that we used Jimmy (Iovine) and I think he's great in the role that he did."
Interscope Records chairman Iovine, who serves as a mentor for "Idol" contestants, was often the only one who provided the hopefuls with constructive criticism during the past season.
Reilly also told reporters that the judges table may be rounded out pretty soon. "It could be in a week, or two weeks," he said of naming the rest of the panel.
Season 12 kicks off in January 2013.

More than half of retired Canadians hold some form of debt: CIBC poll

TORONTO - More than half of retired Canadians hold some form of debt which may cut into their retirement plans and cash flow, a new poll suggests.
According to the survey conducted by Harris Decima, 59 per cent of retired Canadians are currently in debt, compared to 76 per cent of non-retirees.
The CIBC, which funded the survey, says the results highlight the need for Canadians to have a good debt repayment strategy, especially as they approach retirement. That's because fixed incomes make it more difficult for retirees to pay down their debt.
?While retired Canadians carry less debt than the national average, their debt could be stagnant and may end up costing them more in interest costs over a longer period of time,? said Christina Kramer, executive vice president of retail distribution and channel strategy at the CIBC.
?You really have to think about the debt you are retiring with because the regular repayments you make will directly affect the discretionary income you have.?
That's because for retirees, who have fixed incomes, all monthly payments must come from retirement savings or pension earnings. This can affect how much money they have left to cover their day-to-day expenses.
Only 27 per cent of the retired Canadians surveyed say they have made an extra payment towards their debt in the last 12 months, compared to 42 per cent of non-retired Canadians.
On average, retired Canadians carry 1.65 debt products with a balance, such as mortgages, lines of credit, loans and credit cards. In contrast, non-retired Canadians carry 2.64 products with a balance.
The percentage of retired Canadians with debt was highest in Atlantic Canada, at 76 per cent. All other regions hovered just below 60 per cent.
The telephone poll of more than 2,000 Canadians is considered accurate to within 2.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
A survey released in the spring suggests that being debt-free is key to the idea of a successful retirement for nearly nine in 10 Canadian homeowners.
The dream of being debt-free was more important to the roughly 2,000 respondents than living near family, keeping busy with a hobby or volunteer work or having a broad group of friends.
Only having good health was listed by more people, according to the survey conducted for Manulife Bank.
Kramer recommends working with a financial advisor to plan out how to best repay your debt. She also suggests setting your debt payment slightly higher than the required payment to reduce overall interest costs.

One flight attendant's grassroots idea has turned into a symbol of unity for United and Continental.

A small gesture is getting big raves from flight attendants who now work for the company created by the merger of United and Continental Airlines but who continue to fly separately?in their traditional United or Continental uniforms?while union and contract issues are worked out.
Flight attendants who came from the old Continental Airlines recently ratified a new contract, which means attendants can now negotiate a joint contract to cover the combined group of about 24,000 flight attendants ? including about 9,000 U.S. flight attendants who came from Continental.
?We have to two diverse cultures with completely different work rules, wants and needs,? said Sara Keagle, a Continental flight attendant who blogs as the Flying Pinto.
The two teams will eventually be blended and issued new matching uniforms. But as a symbol of friendship and bridge-building, flight attendants from each airline have been swapping their regulation neckwear for the scarves and ties worn by the other team.
The informal program was started by Kathe Hull, a United flight attendant who was reading through messages on a flight attendant Facebook page on June 29th. ?It?s sort of been like the first day of school; we?ve all been eyeing each other, wondering if we were going to be friends. I was checking in on the page and I thought that instead of just posting a comment here and there I would make a gesture to my peers at my sister airline,? Hull told NBC News. She asked if a Continental flight attendant would be willing to trade scarves. ?I wanted it to foster a friendship beyond Facebook,? said Hull, who has been a flight attendant for United since Valentine?s Day 1991.
Hull kicked off the program by putting two of her United scarves in a small plastic bag with her name, base city and a note to a potential ?scarf-sister? from Continental. She left the bag in a swap box she set up in the Newark domicile, one of the briefing rooms where flight attendants check-in before their flights.

Hull has learned that swap boxes have been set up at the airline?s bases in Guam, Narita, Japan and Frankfurt, Germany.
?It?s like pen pals meet The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,? said Hull, referring to the popular young adult books and movies about a group of friends who must be apart but stay in touch by sharing a magical pair of blue jeans.
?It?s an uncertain time. Bases are opening and closing. People are shifting around,? said Hull. ?This is a good way to begin feeling like a family.?
The uniforms worn by both United and Continental flight attendants are navy blue, but passengers who look closely should be able to spot the swappers, who have cleared the non-regulation accessories with United management.

Feds May Fine Higher One Finance Firm - The Ticker - The ...
Higher One Holdings Inc. is on the brink of a deal with federal regulators investigating fees the company charged to college students, the Associated Press reports.
The company markets bank cards and checking accounts to students on hundreds of campuses using college and university letterhead, and has been criticized by consumer groups for its numerous and high fees. The fine would end an 18-month investigation of overdraft fees charged between 2008 and 2011, according to A.P. sources, who did not disclose the amount of the fine because the deal has not been made final.

Victims' names emerge in theater rampage
AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? Ashley Moser drifted in and out of consciousness in the ICU, bullets lodged in her throat and abdomen. In her waking moments, she called for her 6-year-old daughter Veronica.
Nobody had the heart to tell her that Veronica was already dead, the youngest victim killed at a Colorado movie theater in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history.
"Nobody can tell her about it," Annie Dalton said of her niece, Ashley Moser. "She is in critical condition, but all she's asking about is her daughter."
Veronica just started swimming lessons on Tuesday, Dalton said.
"She was excited about life as she should be. She's a 6-year-old girl," her great-aunt said
The young girl was among the 12 people killed when a gunman barged into a crowded Colorado theater, set off gas canisters and opened fire as spectators dove for cover. Dozens of others were injured, including the 25-year-old Ashley Moser and 10 others in critical condition as of Friday night.
The victims' identities have emerged one by one after authorities told their families of their deaths. By Saturday afternoon, relatives, employers and family spokesmen had confirmed the identities of seven of those who died.
One is 27-year-old Matt McQuinn. His family's attorney, Rob Scott of Dayton, Ohio, said McQuinn was killed after diving in front of his girlfriend and her older brother to shield them from the gunfire. Scott's account could not be immediately verified.
For Alex Sullivan, it was to be a weekend of fun: He planned to ring in his 27th birthday with friends at the special midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" and then celebrate his first wedding anniversary on Sunday.
Late Friday, Sullivan's family confirmed that police told them he was among those killed.
"He was a very, very good young man," said Sullivan's uncle, Joe Loewenguth. "He always had a smile, always made you laugh. He had a little bit of comic in him. Witty, smart. He was loving, had a big heart."
Micayla Medek, 23, was also among the dead, her father's cousin, Anita Busch, told the Associated Press.
Busch said the news, while heartbreaking, was a relief for the family after an agonizing day of waiting for news.
"I hope this evil act ... doesn't shake people's faith in God," she said.
On Saturday morning, parents of John Larimer released a statement that Navy officials notified them about midnight that their 27-year-old son was one of the 12 killed.
The family said that Larimer's brother is working with the Navy to take his body home to Crystal Lake, Ill. He was with a unit that belongs to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. Tenth Fleet at Buckley Air Force.
An Air Force reservist who worked at Buckley also was among the victims killed. Sgt. Jesse Childress, 29, was a cyber-systems operator, the Air Force said in a statement. Another reservist was treated and released after also being wounded in the shootings.
A blogger and aspiring sports reporter who recently wrote of surviving a Toronto shooting was killed, the woman's brother said.
The death of Jessica Ghawi, who was also known as Jessica Redfield, was a "complete and utter shock," said her brother, Jordan Ghawi.
He has been using his blog and Twitter account to update what he knew about his sister's condition. He also appeared on the NBC "Today" show.
Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said Friday evening that 10 victims died at the theater and two others later died from their injuries.
Jordan Ghawi said on his website that a man who was with his sister at the theater described the chaos, saying he and Jessica Ghawi dropped to take cover when the gunman first started shooting. Jessica Ghawi was shot in the leg, her brother wrote, describing details relayed to him by a man identified on the blog only as a mutual friend named Brent.
The man was then shot, but he continued attending to Jessica Ghawi's wound before he realized she had stopped screaming, Jordan Ghawi stated. The man said Jessica Ghawi had been shot in the head.
Jessica Ghawi, 24, moved to Denver from Texas about a year ago and friends and colleagues described her as outgoing, smart and witty.
Ghawi blogged at length about surviving the Eaton Centre mall shooting in Toronto that killed two people and sent several others to the hospital.
Jessica Ghawi wrote of the Toronto shooting: "I was shown how fragile life was on Saturday. I saw the terror on bystanders' faces. I saw the victims of a senseless crime. I saw lives change. I was reminded that we don't know when or where our time on Earth will end. When or where we will breathe our last breath."
