Zaheer Abbas wants local batting coach for national team ? Cricket news Update

Former Pakistan skipper Zaheer Abbas, on Friday advised the Pakistan Cricket Board to hire some local person as the batting coach of the national team.

Following Pakistan cricket team?s dismal batting performance in the ICC World T20 championship in Sri Lanka last month, the PCB management has decided to snap up services of a full time batting coach. The board has appointed a three-member committee to scrutinise, shortlist and recommend candidates for the newly created post.

Legendary batsman Zaheer Abbas is also part of the three-member panel, which also includes former Test captain and team manager Intikhab Alam and Colonel Naushad Ali. The committee has asked the interested candidates from Pakistan and outside the country to apply for the position until December 5.

But Abbas, who himself have had an illustrious cricketing career, believes a local mentor would be the best choice.

"I just feel that we should have a local person as batting coach because we have produced some great batsmen in our country and one of them can easily enough do the job for the national team," Zaheer Abbas, a veteran of 78 Tests and 62 One Day Internationals, said in an interview on Friday.

Abbas, who is widely known as Asian Bradman for his big hitting, was also on the committee that appointed Dav Whatmore as head coach of the national team in March this year. Pakistan?s recent poor showing with the bat earned the Australian a lot of criticism from the cricketing fraternity of Pakistan. But Abbas defended Whatmore saying he should be given ample time to prove his credentials with the national team.

"Immediately after he took charge we won the Asia Cup but I still feel he needs to be given more time to prove himself. We should not jump to conclusions about his value to the team," said the 65-year old former Pakistan batsman.

Zaheer Abbas also welcomed BCCI?s decision to host Pakistan in a short limited overs series later this year, but said that it would have been very good had the two boards included Test matches as well in the itinerary.
