Why Facebook Is Folding On Credits And Doubling Down On Payments

attachment (1)In a surprising move this week, with just a short post on their Developer Blog, Facebook has ended their three-year experi ment with the virtual currency of Facebook Credits. Credits will be phased out by the end of the year and users will simply have a Facebook account with a balance measured in Dollars in the U.S., or whatever currency is native to a country. Facebook?s new member accounts will function similarly to an iTunes account: a user adds a credit card to their account, digital goods can be purchased and immediately charged to the card on file, or can be drawn from stored value in that account. ?If you are given a Facebook gift card, in card or digital form, you would add that reward code to your account and that value would be stored until you use it ? just like an iTunes gift card is added to your account and stored until spent.

Bloomberg: Microsoft Surface Will Be Wi-Fi Only [Rumors]

Microsoft's new Surface tablet looks like it could give the iPad stiff competition—but according to Bloomberg it won't be matching Apple's offering on every front. Their sources suggest that, initially at least, the Surface will only feature Wi-Fi, and no option for a mobile data connection. More »

South Florida shoppers reveal their savings strategy

Visiting up to six stores to stock up on fresh food and staples may seem like a waste of time and gas. But many South Florida shoppers are saying the more they shop, the more they save.

In addition to scanning fliers and clipping coupons, hard-core bargain hunters are visiting multiple stores, sniffing out deals to stretch their food dollars.

And with good reason. Grocery bills are skyrocketing, with prices rising nearly 3 percent through May according to June's Consumer Price Index Summary released by U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. .

Joan Rosenberg, of Royal Palm Beach, says it does.

"I shop at four to five stores for groceries because I know that I'm going to save 20 to 30 percent easily," she says. "I go wherever the deals are. I check the circulars in the newspaper and get email alerts.

"I have teenagers, and my son can eat a whole week's worth of groceries in a day."

Emilia Boshart, 64, and her husband Joe, 66, of Pompano Beach trek west to visit Costco in Coral Springs and Penn Dutch Food Center in Margate every other week, with additional trips to Publix in between. They make the long drive, they say, because you can't beat the prices.

"I love it. I come for the meats and save about 50 percent," she says, pointing to Penn Dutch's $1.79 per pound price on chicken. "The boneless chicken breast is so cheap, it's worth the drive. I have a cooler in the back of the car for when I make my run. It's worth the time if you have a system."

Planning is the key to keeping gas consumption in check.

Jennifer Perloni, 28, of Coral Springs and her husband plan shopping trips around whatever part of town they are going to visit on other errands.

"The stores are near my daughter's karate school," she says. "Publix and [Doris Italian Market in Coral Springs] are both down the street, so we're not using much gas to go to each store."

She also shops at Sedano's Supermarkets and Broward Meat and Fish, both in North Lauderdale; and Walmart Supercenter near her house.

"At Sedano's two weeks ago, they had split chicken breast on the bone for 99 cents a pound. At Publix, it's usually $3 or $4, so I saved quite a bit," she says. "I bought about 18 pounds of chicken. That will get me through a few weeks."

Penn Dutch sometimes offers chicken breast for $1.49 a pound, Rosenberg says. "My husband works near there in Margate, so I'll ask him to stop in and grab 10 pounds."

In the end, she says, these shopping trips help her pay for other essentials.

"If I save $15 or $20 on groceries, then I can put that in the gas tank," she says.

You can also cut down on road trips by purchasing multiple items of the things you use regularly when they're on sale.

"Buy two too many so you don't have to be forced to buy something at full price," says savings expert Jodi Furman, of Lake Worth. "But stock up rationally, which means not storing hundreds of rolls of toilet paper under you child's bed."

Savings is her job

When Furman isn't shopping, she's writing for LiveFabuLESS.com, her popular shopping and savings blog. Four years ago, she quit her job as a sales and marketing associate for a pharmaceutical company to run the website, which she says gets about 50,000 unique visitors a month.

Sorry Einstein, the universe needs quantum uncertainty

It doesn't look like quantum mechanics will ever be intuitive. Take away one of its weirdest components - the uncertainty principle - and you end up with a perpetual motion machine. The finding dashes the hopes of those searching for a less bizarre way to make sense of quantum theory, which has made many physicists uncomfortable, including Albert Einstein.

Despite being one of the most successful theories of all times in terms of its ability to explain and predict various phenomena, the world of quantum mechanics incorporates many counter-intuitive ideas.

One of these is the uncertainty principle, which states that in the quantum world it is impossible to simultaneously know two quantities, such as a particle's location and its momentum, with complete accuracy. The more you know about one, the less you can know about the other.

This is demonstrated in a variation of the famous double slit experiment, where single photons seem to pass through two slits in a barrier at once, producing an interference pattern on a screen that is due to its momentum. Adding a photon detector at either one of the slits, however, removes the uncertainty in the photon's location, causing the momentum to be more uncertain. This destroys the pattern on the screen.

Nevertheless, accepting that uncertainty exists not due to a lack of knowledge but thanks to a fundamental law doesn't sit well with some physicists. One famous dissenter was Einstein, who was contemptuous of the idea that unpredictability could be integral to the physical laws governing the universe. Oscar Dahlsten, a theoretical physicist from the University of Oxford, says that a lot of people still intuitively feel that the uncertainty principle should not hold up.

Previously, researchers have searched for a solution via "hidden variables", which may be operating behind the scenes, making things look weirder than they actually are. So far, though, this approach has failed.

Now Stephanie Wehner and Esther H?nggi at the National University of Singapore's Centre for Quantum Technology have taken a new tack, recasting the uncertainty principle in the language of information theory.

First, they suggest that the two properties of a single object that cannot be known simultaneously can be thought of as two streams of information encoded in the same particle. In the same way that you can't know a particle's momentum and location to an arbitrarily high level of accuracy, you also can't completely decode both of these messages. If you figure out how to read message 1 more accurately, then your ability to decrypt message 2 becomes more limited.

Next the pair calculate what happens if they loosen the limits of the uncertainty principle in this scenario, allowing the messages to be better decoded and letting you access information that you wouldn't have had when the uncertainty principle was in force.

Wehner and H?nggi conclude that this is the same as getting more useful energy, or work, out of a system than is put in, which is forbidden by the second law of thermodynamics. That is because both energy and information are needed to extract work from a system.

To understand why, imagine trying to drive a piston using a container full of heated gas. If you don't know in which direction the gas particles are moving, you may angle the piston wrongly and get no useful work out of the system. But if you do know which way they are moving, you will be able to angle the piston so that the moving particles drive it. You will have converted the heat into useful work in the second scenario, even though the same amount of energy is available as in the first scenario.

Being able to decode both of the messages in Wehner and H?nggi's imaginary particle suddenly gives you more information. As demonstrated by the piston, this means you have the potential to do more work. But this extra work comes for free so is the same as creating a perpetual motion machine, which is forbidden by thermodynamics (arxiv.org/abs/1205.6894v1).

"The second law of thermodynamics is something which we see everywhere and basically no one is questioning," says Mario Berta, a theoretical physicist from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, who was not involved in the work. "Now we know that without an uncertainty principle we could break the second law."

Since this would be far weirder than the existence of such a principle in the first place, it essentially justifies the uncertainty principle. "This work is about understanding why exactly quantum theory is as it is," says Berta.

When this article was first posted, its first sentence read "SORRY Einstein, but it doesn't look like quantum mechanics will ever be intuitive. "

Tony Awards 'Book Of Mormon' Opener (VIDEO)

The 2012 Tony Awards opened with a blast from the past -- 2011 best musical winner and reliable crowd-pleaser "The Book of Mormon." The show began with a group of Mormon Elders going door to door -- calling on Ricky Martin, Matthew Broderick, Cynthia Nixon, James Earl Jones and Judith Light -- and moving into their introductory song "Hello."

The show's original stars, Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad, were sadly absent (Gad gave his final performance last Wednesday, and Rannells' was today), but a darker-haired Neil Patrick Harris stepped in to lead the show.

Bradley scores decision win over Pacquiao

(AP) ? Timothy Bradley promised to shock, though the biggest shock in his fight with Manny Pacquiao came from the judges' scorecards.

In a fight Pacquiao seemed to have in hand, two judges decided otherwise, giving Bradley a split decision Saturday night and ending the Filipino fighter's remarkable seven-year unbeaten run.

Promoter Bob Arum fumed, the crowd at the MGM Grand arena booed, and Pacquiao seemed stunned when the decision was announced. Arum said there would be a November rematch, though he blasted the way the decision went down.

"I've never been as ashamed of the sport of boxing as I am tonight," said Arum, who handles both fighters.

Bradley came on strong in the later rounds, winning five of the last six rounds on two scorecards and four on the third. He won 115-113 on two scorecards, while losing on the third by the same margin. The Associated Press had Pacquiao winning 117-111.

"I did my best," Pacquiao said. "I guess my best wasn't good enough."

Pacquiao tried to turn the fight into a brawl, using his power to hurt Bradley in the early rounds. But Bradley changed tactics in the middle rounds and used his boxing skills to win enough rounds to take the narrow decision for the welterweight title.

It ended a 15-fight winning streak by Pacquiao dating to 2005 that turned him into a boxing superstar and made him a national hero in the Philippines.

"I thought I won the fight," Bradley said. "I didn't think he was as good as everyone says he was. I didn't feel his power."

Ringside punching statistics showed Pacquiao landing 253 punches to 159 for Bradley, who vowed before the fight to take the 147-pound title from Pacquiao. The Compubox statistics showed Pacquiao landing more punches in 10 of the 12 rounds.

Bradley was so confident that he had oversized tickets printed up for a Nov. 10 rematch that will now likely happen.

Bradley seemed hurt in the fourth and fifth rounds, but Pacquiao had trouble landing big punches after that. Still, he seemed in control of the fight everywhere but on the judge's scorecards.

"Can you believe that? Unbelievable," Arum said. "I went over to Bradley before the decision and he said, 'I tried hard but I couldn't beat the guy.'"

Bradley said he hurt his ankle in the second round, and that trainer Joel Diaz said he could either quit or try to take the fight to Pacquiao.

"I got my second wind in the sixth round," Bradley said. "I worked the angles, sticking and moving."

Pacquiao said he studied Bradley on tape before the fight and wasn't surprised by anything he did. He said he thought he was in control of the fight and was shocked when the decision went against him.

"He never hurt me with his punches, most of them landed on my arms," Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao tried to brawl with Bradley and seemed to hurt him in both the fourth and fifth rounds. But Bradley started moving and counter punching, though he never seemed to land any shots that hurt Pacquiao.

Pacquiao had vowed to look impressive against Bradley after struggling in his last outing with Juan Manuel Marquez, a fight many thought he lost. And he did early, landing good long left hands while beating Bradley to the punch on most exchanges.

"He hurt me a couple of times with his left," Bradley said. "He's a beast."

Trainer Freddie Roach told Pacquiao after the 10th round that he had control of the fight, and urged him to fight hard the final two rounds.

"You have six minutes to go, son," Roach said. "It's your fight."

But it wasn't Pacquiao's fight, with Bradley getting credit for winning some of the close middle and later rounds. After the 11th round Bradley went back to his corner and trainer Joel Diaz told him he needed to win the final round.

"I listened to my corner," Bradley said. "I got to give him a rematch now."

Arum said there will be one on Nov. 10, though he thought Pacquiao won easily, as did most writers at ringside.

"I'll make a lot of money off the rematch, but this was outrageous," Arum said.

It was the biggest fight of Bradley's career and it came with a minimum $5 million payday. The rematch will be even richer, though Pacquiao's loss could damage any plans for a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather did not see the fight because he is serving a sentence on a domestic abuse charge at a jail a few miles from the MGM Grand.
