Our Many Reasons For Becoming a Vegetarian

Article by Robert Walden

Today is a great day. Why? Because today is the day you have the chance to become a vegetarian. Don?t think that you?ll be along, as over 3.6% of the United States? population classifies themselves as ?vegetarian,? which places the number over 7 million. There are a number of reasons for you to make the switch, but let?s just touch on a few.

A lot of people decide to become a vegetarian for the health benefits that the diet provides. Cutting meat out of your diet, or at least limiting it (as is the case with the flexitarian diet), goes a long way to remove a great deal of unneeded fat from your diet. This helps to reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. People mention having more energy as well, meaning those longer lives are more active lives.

But the health reason is the only one people point to. Ethically, a lot of people are uncomfortable or just downright disgusted by the idea of killing an animal for consumption or for any reason whatsoever. Eating meat is merely a byproduct of refusing to support any industry or activity that harms animals, and a lot of the times the lifestyle doesn?t stop at just becoming a vegetarian, though that?s an article for another day.

Along with the ethical reasons, many point to environmental rationale for abstaining from meat. Right now, the meat industry is pitifully inefficient as it takes 16 grams of grain to produce 1 gram of beef, plus transportation and housing the animals and providing water and all sorts of other necessities to the industry result in roughly 20% of the world?s greenhouse gases coming from the meat industry alone.

And yet there is still one last reason people choose to be vegetarian, and it comes down to a religious belief. About 20-30% of Hindu believers are vegetarian, as it only makes sense seeing as how they believe that cows are sacred and therefore don?t eat beef or drink milk from cows.

There?s never been an easier time than now to be a vegetarian as the range of vegetarian and vegan foods and recipes have become staggering. The Internet has aided this by letting vegetarians get in contact and share their lifestyle easier, magnifying the ease of living a vegetarian lifestyle. So today is indeed a good day. What reason will you think of to become a vegetarian?
